To many, visiting the state of Montana is generally summarized in nature expeditions. Indeed, it is the beautiful scenery, mountains and forests that make the Treasure State so appealing. However, when you visit the Northwest, you will inevitably pass through one of the towns in the Flathead Valley. Whether it’s Bigfork, in between swimming sessions in Flathead Lake, or Kalispell, after visiting Glacier National Park. You might stop by Whitefish after a day of skiing at the mountain resort. These three main towns in the Flathead Valley each have their own characteristics and charm. Since they are not far apart, you can move from one town to another quickly. So you won’t miss any of the Flathead Valley experiences.

Bigfork

Located on the lakefront, Bigfork is one of the most beautiful towns in the Flathead Valley. It was founded in 1894 by a young hunter who fell in love with the area during his very first visit. Everit Sliter planted a large orchard here. Bigfork got its name from the fork in the Flathead and Swan rivers that flow into the lake around the town.

Today, Bigfork is the perfect place to spend time during the summer. This small town of fewer than 5,000 people is teeming with tourists during the warm season. You can visit, swim and picnic at Wayfarers and finish the day with a show downtown. Rent a boat and go swimming or wakeboarding in the middle of Flathead Lake. Spend your afternoon sampling beers and liquors at one of the many breweries and distilleries in the area. Enjoy one of the city’s many festivals, both cultural and sporting, no matter the season.

Bigfork may be one of the smallest towns in the Flathead Valley, but it has a lot to offer. You’ll always find something to do or visit, great restaurants that always offer local craft beers. Find all the information you need on Bigfork’s website.

Kalispell

Kalispell is the most populous city in the Flathead Valley. It was founded in 1892 by Charles Edward Conrad. He built the famous Conrad Mansion, which today serves as a reminder of Kalispell’s origins.  Located in the center of the valley, Kalispell is an ideal base camp for your vacation expeditions. From Kalispell, you can reach both the lake and the trails of Whitefish Mountain Resort while being close to Glacier National Park.

In addition to your out-of-town trips, Kalispell has all kinds of activities in store for you. Shop at local boutiques on Main Street and visit the city’s museums. For the more outdoorsy, take a walk in Lone Pine Park and view the city from the top of the hill.

Check out the events, parades are held regularly throughout the year on Main Street. A few times a year, there are nightly events with discounts and drinks in the city’s stores. For car fans, collectors’ events are held throughout the summer.

Discover the city’s breweries and restaurants during your stay! Whether it’s a sandwich at The Knead Cafe or a pizza from Moose’s, the list of opportunities is endless. There’s something for every taste and every budget.

Whitefish

Whitefish is a typical ski resort town. With its partially seasonal population and a particular interest in outdoor sports, there is always something to do.

Of course, in the winter everyone goes skiing. But like the other towns in the Flathead Valley, Whitefish has many facets. While most people are taking the chairlift, you can enjoy the snow your way! Go hiking, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on one of the many Big Mountain trails. Go axe throwing in downtown Whitefish. Why not check out the bars that host great après-ski parties at the end of the day?

In the summer, take advantage of Whitefish Lake to cool off without having to drive to Bigfork. Browse the thrift stores and find something to complete your wardrobe at a lower price. Head up to the ski resort and go zip lining and summer sledding! And that’s just a very short sampling of what you can do in this beautiful town in the northern Flathead Valley!
